First mentioned in a document in 1285, the castle belonged to the archbishops of Cologne and was once one of the largest and most impressive moated castles on the Rhine.
The purpose of the fortress was to protect the territory of Electoral Cologne against Electoral Trier. At times, it also served to protect the archbishop from the townspeople. In 1287, 1357 and 1365, it was furiously attacked and damaged by angry inhabitants of Andernach. However, Archbishop Engelbert had the castle restored in 1367. It was again partially destroyed during the Palatinate War of Succession at the end of the 17th century.
The keep, remains of the 14th century residential hall and the mighty bridge over the moat have been preserved. The keep was used as a prison from 1836. From 1911 until World War II, a youth hostel was housed here.
The former castle courtyard is now landscaped and serves as an event venue.
